If the only thing you’ve ever hiked is a parking garage ramp, welcome—Los Angeles is about to make you a believer. You don’t need hiking boots or a car stuffed with gear. You just need an appetite for a little city-meets-nature magic. As a TrekVista guide (and a recent LA transplant, myself), I put together these simple, beautiful local trails that anyone—yes, anyone—can tackle, even on a busy weekday.
New to LA and feeling iffy about hills? The Palisades Park bluffs overlooking the Pacific are your friendly training ground. Start beneath the palm trees at Ocean Avenue, and wander the gravel paths that run parallel to the beach. For a quick cardio burst, try the “Secret Stairs” off Adelaide Drive, frequented by friendly locals and the odd celebrity on their morning routine. You get ocean views, birdsong, and that SoCal sunshine in under an hour—with coffee at the end if you want it.
No special shoes or maps required. Just bring water (and possibly a camera—the sunsets here are legendary, even for jaded Angelenos).
Don’t believe the LA hiking hype? Griffith Park will change your mind. The West Observatory Trail is a welcoming intro for locals and visitors alike—lots of city views and a final stretch that leads you right to the Observatory itself. Take it slow; it’s short but packs a steady climb. If you’re early, you’ll share the trails with joggers, dog walkers, and maybe spot a coyote (don’t panic—they’re regulars).
For street parking, arrive before 9am. Join a guided walk or download a map from the city website for bonus confidence. Either way, you’re just 15 minutes from downtown, but it feels like another world.
Looking for something really under-the-radar? Try Mar Vista’s Ballona Creek Trail. It’s flat, bike-friendly, and perfect for first-timers or multi-generational groups. Or, meander through Kenneth Hahn Park in Baldwin Hills, where wildflowers and skyline views swap for smog and stoplights. The trails here wind past a secret lake and picnic-friendly lawns—it's barely crowded, no matter the season.
Bonus: Many LA neighborhoods (not just Silver Lake!) have “staircase walks”—just zigzag the blocks around Sunset Junction or Eagle Rock and you’ll stumble across mosaic-tiled steps and surprise murals along the way. Total city explorer vibes with zero chance of getting lost.
If you’re new to LA—or just hiking—step outside and give these local treks a try. There’s more nature here than you can imagine, and it’s accessible, beautiful, and surprisingly neighborly. TrekVista can guide your first hikes, or you can take our route maps and make it your own. LA’s wild side isn’t out of reach—it starts right on your doorstep.
